The opposite of “apples-to-apples” is “apples-to-oranges,” which means to compare two things that are fundamentally different and not comparable. For example, you might say, “You’re comparing apples with oranges. They are two very different jobs with very different types of stress”.
Let’s start with the rotten apple…
All too often, with businesses that I work with, one or two people in the business are a rotten apple.
I’m sure you’ve seen them. They’re people who are passive aggressive, who undermines the management decisions with snide remarks, talk negatively about people, refuse to engage in open & honest conversations & they deliberately don’t play by the rules etc.
And what you see as a Leadership team is only a fraction of what is really going on – if you ask the team members, you’ll find it’s portably 10 times as bad as what you see.
Sometimes these people think they are invincible & the business will never get rid of them.
Why? Because, frankly, they’ve been allowed to get away with it!
Management usually knows that the behaviour is going on. They know it’s not right, but they may not want to deal with it for fear of repercussions.
But guess what? The repercussion of not dealing with it is that you are setting the standard for the rest of the team & you may continue to lose good people because of it.
And whilst positivity can spread, negativity spreads far more quickly & is far wider reaching.
And good people won’t stay in that environment.
How many good people are you going to lose before you do something about it?
Now, I get it. Dealing with it is tough…. But here’s the thing: Visionaries, that’s what you have a Visionary & strong leaders for.
Let them make those decisions – the best thing you can do is just let them do what needs to be done & support them with it. The biggest mistake I see is the leadership team being willing to take action & the Visionary holding them back, for some reason.
I’ve heard all the excuses… But they’re a relative of another employee, or they’re one of my relatives, they’ve been with us for 20 years, but they’re not really that bad. We’ll struggle to replace them.
Here’s the truth… Rotten, like mould (even if just a little bit) spreads if left untreated.
They’re not a bad a person – they’re just not a fit for your business & I guarantee they are not happy.
So, free them up to go somewhere they love & where they can be happy… They will thank you for it & your team will too.
There has never been a company that I have worked with that has said that they regretted doing it. They all say they wish they had done it sooner & they are pleasantly surprised about how quickly they found a replacement & how much better things are because of it.
I had one company that lost 8 (yes, you read that right!), eight good people because of a rotten apple.
The conversation with the Leadership Team went something like this…
How much has that cost the business in lost time, lost revenue & lost opportunities…. And how much more are you going to allow them to take from you?
Sometimes you need to bite the bullet & pay people out, just to help them go quickly, but do the ROI – what have they cost you, what more will they cost you if they stay?… It should be a no-brainer!
The articles below talk about some ways to recognise these issues & how to deal with them – like asking the 3 pertinent questions if you feel you have a wrong person issue, how to have open & honest conversations & how to ensure that you are not seeing only one side of the equation.
I also encourage you to listen to the podcast with Tony Falkenstein, who shares his way of “How to let People go” – and he’s done it a few times.
PS: There are many different ways to skin a cat. Just make sure you get legal advice from your HR team before you take action!
I was going to do the 2 apple stories, but I feel like I have rambled enough for now. So I’ll leave the apples to apples for next fortnight.
