In business, this translates to:
- Sales promising the moon—while delivery teams stare at each other, thinking, “How on earth are we doing this?”
- No alignment on priorities—so everyone works on what they think is important.
- No measurables—so success gets defined by whoever shouts the loudest.
It’s exhausting.
The Rules of the Game in Business
Here’s what great businesses do:
- How to Play (Clarity): Everyone knows their role. Like in backyard cricket, you can’t have everyone trying to bowl at once (or hogging the bat).
- What goes wrong? People overlap, miss deadlines, or worse, step on each other’s toes—cue finger-pointing.
- How to Win (Measurables): You need a scoreboard. In business, this isn’t just “trying hard”; it’s tracking real, tangible results:
- Sales calls made.
- Projects delivered on time.
- Customer satisfaction scores.
- No scoreboard? It’s like playing Christmas charades blindfolded—no one knows who’s winning, so they just keep guessing.
- Accountability (What Happens When We Drop the Ball): In sports, a ref blows the whistle. In business, accountability keeps everyone on track—not to punish, but to coach. Mistakes happen. The important thing is recognising it quickly, course-correcting, & moving on.
The Magic of Rules: More Winning, Less Arguing
In both sport & business, rules are not about killing the fun. Quite the opposite—they create space for fun. When the rules are clear, the game runs smoothly. Everyone knows what they’re supposed to do, where they’re heading, & how they’ll know they’ve won.
Suddenly, teamwork happens, momentum builds, & instead of shouting at each other in frustration, you’re celebrating wins together.
Wishing You Clear Rules & A Winning Christmas 🎄
So, as you wrap up the year & prepare for some festive family games, here’s my challenge to you:
- Check the rules of your business. Are they clear? Does everyone know how to play, how to win, & what happens when things go off track?
- Have fun with your team. Celebrate the wins this year—& set the game plan for an even bigger year ahead.
And most importantly—have fun with your family! Whether it’s cricket, Monopoly, or a slightly competitive round of Pictionary, may your Christmas games be joyful, clear, & chaos-free.
Merry Christmas & here’s to a winning 2025! 🎅
