Better Business, Better Life – Issue 156

As I sit here in Melbourne recovering from COVID (silver linings: time to reflect!), I wanted to share a quick personal update…

I’m fllipping the map… & shifting my base.

business action

Some of you may already know a little, but I’ve now finalised my plans.

From mid-June, I’ll be spending more time in Melbourne for the next 12–18 months.

Here’s what’s changing (and more importantly, what’s not).

The practice here has grown significantly, & I’ve made a personal decision to rebalance where I spend my time – for both my mental & financial well-being. But, importantly – nothing changes for my clients.

✅ I’ll still be in New Zealand regularly – usually once or twice a month – & will continue to run in-person, virtual & hybrid sessions as planned.

✅ I’m keeping my home in Auckland – NZ is still very much home.

✅ Both EOS session rooms – in Auckland & Melbourne – will remain fully operational.

✅ I’ll still travel to other locations as needed.

So really, it’s just a shift from 25% in Melbourne to 25% in Auckland – for a year or so.

💡For my Melbourne clients, this means more availability – more session slots, more flexibility, & more opportunities for spontaneous coffees or quick in-person check-ins.

💡If you know of any Melbourne-based businesses that are feeling stuck, struggling with growth, or need alignment at the leadership level – I’d love to help them implement EOS. Please connect us.

💡And yes – I do still have space for one or two more NZ clients too.

This shift has been quietly happening for a couple of months already – & I’ve continued delivering the same high-quality EOS sessions (in fact, some say I’m more focused than ever! 😊).

Thank you for your continued trust & support. I remain fully committed to each of you – regardless of where I’m based.

And of course, Business Action continues to support both cities through our strategic partnerships with the Entrepreneurs’ Organisation & the Family Business Association.

So, please reach out if I can help.

And now onto this week’s IRL (In Real Life)…

BUSINESS TOOLS & REAL-LIFE LESSONS

Why OKRs Fail and Rocks Deliver

I was chatting with a founder a few weeks ago during an exploratory call to see how I could help his business, and he asked me a great question:

“We’ve been using OKRs… but they just aren’t working. Are we doing something wrong?”

Short answer? Probably not.

Longer answer? You’re not alone. I see this all the time.

This company had ambitious goals. They had OKRs for every team member, beautifully formatted in a Google Sheet. But no one was really owning them. And nothing was getting done.

They were aiming high… but spinning their wheels.

OKRs vs Rocks: What’s the difference?

OKRs (Objectives & Key Results) look great on paper. You set a big aspirational goal, then list 3 to 5 key results to measure progress. Great in theory.

But when you’re leading a growing business with 20 or more people, it’s easy to drown in a sea of “goals” that no one’s really driving.

Rocks, on the other hand, are different.

In EOS, we keep it simple.

  1. Just 3 to 7 priorities per quarter
  2. Each one has a single owner
  3. Clear outcome
  4. Due in 90 days

That’s it. No fluff. No confusion.

Real-life Example: The OKR Swamp

Another business I worked with last year had tried to implement OKRs across their leadership team. Everyone had their own list of goals, most with vague measurements. The Visionary had 5 big-picture objectives. The Integrator had 4 operational ones. Marketing had 3 they’d copied from a HubSpot blog.

When I asked, “How are they going?”… I got blank stares.

It’s not that they didn’t care. It’s that no one had clarity. There was no accountability. And they were spending more time updating the spreadsheet than doing the work.

After our Focus Day together, they ditched the OKRs and set 5 company Rocks. Each one was owned. Each one was clear. Three months later, they’d nailed 4 out of 5. Traction.

Why Rocks Work Better (For Most Entrepreneurs)

1. Rocks are built for focus

OKRs often become wish lists. Rocks force you to choose.

You can’t chase every shiny object when you only get 3 to 7 priorities for the whole quarter.

Analogy:

OKRs are like a buffet – everything looks good, but you leave feeling bloated and unsatisfied.

Rocks are like a perfectly cooked meal – intentional, satisfying and designed to fuel you forward.

2. Rocks demand ownership

No shared responsibility. No “team goals.” Just one person with their name next to it. You know who’s accountable – and so do they.

3. Rocks deliver Traction

Instead of “setting goals” and hoping they stick, Rocks are about building a habit of execution. You don’t just plan – you deliver.

Why I Love Rocks (And Use Them Myself)

Every quarter, I set my own Rocks – in all three businesses.

  1. Not “grow revenue”
  2. Not “be more visible”
  3. But specific, focused, measurable Rocks with real impact

For example:

  1. Launch our Melbourne EOS client event by May
  2. Record and release 3 solo podcast episodes
  3. Recruit a new assistant for Business Action

Each one has an outcome. Each one has a deadline. And I get them done – because they matter.

Full disclosure. I, too, used to have too many each quarter – it took me almost 2 years to realise that I can get 2, maybe 3 done… Yes, I’m a slow learner!

If you’re stuck with OKRs that look good but don’t go anywhere, it might be time to try something different.

Let’s get you out of the swamp and into something simpler that actually works.
