Most people assume family businesses collapse because of external threats – economic downturns, competitor pressure, or market disruption.
But in my experience, working with family businesses across Australia & NZ, that’s rarely the real issue.
Most people assume family businesses collapse because of external threats – economic downturns, competitor pressure, or market disruption.
But in my experience, working with family businesses across Australia & NZ, that’s rarely the real issue.
It’s assumptions.
You know the type:
“Everyone knows I’m taking over.”
“My brother’s not interested – he hasn’t said otherwise.”
“Mum’s retired now – she won’t interfere anymore.”
“We’ve always split things evenly. It’ll be the same this time.”
“Dad said he trusts us to make decisions…” (Then he steps in & reverses them.)
These assumptions feel safe – until they explode. They’re rarely voiced, even less frequently tested, and often completely wrong.
And when they go unspoken for too long, they create rifts that are hard to repair.
A Real-Life Example (Names Changed)
I recently worked with a third-generation business in regional Australia.
The two brothers who’d been running the business had stopped speaking.
One was convinced he was the natural successor. The other assumed leadership was being shared. Their mother – who’d officially stepped away – still held informal influence, regularly weighing in on decisions through side conversations and group chats.
Nothing had been made explicit. Everything was assumed.
The business was stagnating. Tension was rising. And the family was slowly falling apart.
We used EOS® to change that. Through the Vision/Traction Organiser™ (V/TO™), they clarified their 10-Year Target.
Through the Accountability Chart™, they redefined roles based on skills – not birth order. And through Same Page Meetings, we finally had the tough conversations that had been avoided for years.
Now?
The business is growing. The team is aligned. And the family eats together again.
Why This Happens
The issue comes down to blurred boundaries between Family, Ownership, & Business.
This is where the Harvard 3-Circle Model comes in. It helps families understand that these are three very different systems – and when they get muddled, chaos follows.
Each has its own purpose. Each needs a different kind of conversation.
When we assume they’re the same – or ignore them altogether – trouble starts.
Where EOS Helps
EOS brings structure, language & tools that let families move from assumption to alignment.
It’s not about removing emotion – it’s about not letting it run the business.
