Better Business, Better Life – Issue 164

Big news – the We Run on EOS Conference in Melbourne is officially sold out…

Even bigger news – I’m one of the speakers!

business action

I’ll be sharing a session that’s close to my heart:

“Are you self-implementing or self-inflicting EOS in your business?”

We’ll explore the most common mistakes leadership teams make when trying to self-implement and how to avoid turning a great system into a source of pain.

More than 500 business leaders will be in the room, learning how to run stronger businesses & live better lives.

Here’s the exciting bit – I still have a very small number of complimentary tickets available.

If you’d love to be in the room, email me or Adam Harris and tell us why you want to attend.

I can’t promise everyone a spot – but I’ll do my best to help a few passionate business owners join us.

Now, onto the real-life stories.

BUSINESS TOOLS & REAL-LIFE LESSONS

Self-Implementer Days: Fine-Tune or Fall Behind?

So, you’ve decided to self-implement EOS.

You’re smart, capable & resourceful. You’ve read Traction, downloaded the tools, & maybe even run a few L10 meetings.

But let’s be brutally honest – how’s that actually going?

In the past few months alone, I’ve run Self-Implementer Days with several leadership teams who were doing EOS… or so they thought.

In reality?

They’d bolted on parts of the system, misused key tools, or skipped the hardest bits entirely.

Not intentionally – just from lack of visibility or experience.

Here’s what we usually uncover in a single day:

  1. No proper Accountability Chart – often skipped entirely or treated like a fancy org chart. But this is the foundational tool. If it’s missing or wrong, everything else (Scorecards, Rocks, L10s) is built on shaky ground.
  2. Wrong people in the wrong seats – the fastest way to spot this is via a clean Accountability Chart. Without it, these issues stay hidden.
  3. Rocks that are just glorified to-do lists – no laser-sharp focus, no traction.
  4. Scorecards full of KPIs, but no measurables driving behaviour
  5. Meetings that look like L10s, but miss the structure, energy & discipline.

💡 When the Accountability Chart is right, everything else starts falling into place.

The devil’s advocate view:

“We’ve got the book. Why pay for help?”

Fair question.

But here’s the thing – EOS isn’t a reading exercise. It’s a practical, integrated system.

You can self-implement – but if you’re not getting the results, it’s time for a tune-up.

Just like a race car needs regular pit stops, your EOS journey might need a recalibration.

What a Self-Implementer Day delivers:

  1. Honest, outside eyes on your tools & habits
  2. Real-time coaching to simplify & strengthen what you’ve built
  3. Clarity on what’s missing or misfiring – & how to fix it
  4. Recommitment from your whole leadership team
  5. A fast-track to real traction

And no, it’s not a sales pitch for ongoing work – most clients walk away with exactly what they need to keep going confidently on their own.

One important note:

There’s no guarantee we’ll get through Focus Day, Vision Building 1 & 2 in one session – that depends on how solid your foundational tools are. But we’ll aim to do exactly that, or build the clearest path forward to get you there.

FIND OF THE MONTH

When I moved to Melbourne, I was lucky – I could bring Apollo, Hermes & Morpheus with me.

Expensive? Yes. Stressful? Absolutely.

But I wouldn’t have it any other way.

For many people though, having a real dog just isn’t possible.

Maybe it’s due to allergies, living arrangements, health issues, or emotional circumstances.

That’s where I stumbled across something fascinating – Jennie, the robot dog from Tombot.

Jennie isn’t a toy.

She’s a medically validated robotic companion designed to bring comfort to those who need it most – especially people living with dementia, PTSD, or loneliness.

What I love about this:

  • She looks & moves like a real puppy – tail wags, head tilts, even cuddles
  • Developed with medical experts to support emotional well-being
  • No vet bills, no barking at the courier, no digging up your garden

It’s not a replacement for real animals – but it’s a pretty incredible alternative for those who can’t have one.

This one really tugged at my heartstrings. As someone who relies on my animals for emotional support, I get why Jennie could make a real difference in someone’s life.

Feel free to forward this to someone who might need a little extra companionship.
