Better Business, Better Life – Issue 170

I’ll be honest – I hate missing targets. Whether it’s in business, fitness, or even getting out the door on time, it grates on me. Not because I expect perfection, but because I know how easy it is to let “near enough” become the norm.

It starts small – you let yourself off the hook once, then again. Before you know it, it’s a pattern. Suddenly “close enough” feels acceptable, & the bar keeps dropping without you even noticing.

That’s why I get fired up about targets. They aren’t just numbers on a page – they’re promises.

Promises to yourself, to your team, & to the future you’re building. When you miss them, it’s not just a blip. It’s a signal.

BUSINESS TOOLS & REAL-LIFE LESSONS

Throwing Chairs (Without Breaking the Furniture)

When was the last time you got properly p*ssed off about missing a target?

I’m not talking about muttering “ah well, the market’s tough” & moving on. I mean throwing-chairs energy. The kind of frustration that makes you sit up, pay attention & say: “This isn’t good enough – we need to fix it.”

Because here’s the deal:

  • Missed revenue? It matters.
  • Rocks under 80%? It matters.
  • Profit off track? Yep, that matters too.

If you’re shrugging, joking, or “near enough is good enough”… you’re training your team to accept mediocrity.

Why I Won’t Let It Slide

I didn’t become an EOS Implementer to run comfortable meetings. I’m not here to nod, smile & let you coast.

You hired me to help you win. That means I’ll:

  • Call out when the numbers are ugly.
  • Push you to dig past the excuses.
  • Challenge whether you really want what you say you want.

Support doesn’t mean enabling. I’ll support you by holding the bar high, not by lowering it so you feel better about missing.

The Complacency Trap

Complacency is sneaky. First, it’s “just one Rock missed.” Then it’s 70% completion. Then profit’s down, but “close enough.” Before you know it, “good enough” has become the culture.

Jim Collins nailed it: “Mediocrity stems from chronic inconsistency.”

That’s why every target matters – not because I’m obsessed with perfection, but because greatness comes from doing what you said you’d do, when you said you’d do it.

Throw Chairs. Don’t Shrug.

So, next time you miss a number, don’t shrug. Don’t excuse it. Throw a metaphorical chair. Get fired up. Then let’s IDS the hell out of it & fix the root cause.

Because EOS only works if you do. And I care too much about your success to sit quietly while the wheels fall off.

Thanks to MOD (Mark O’Donnell) for the gentle reminder!
