Better Business, Better Life – Issue 177

You know that look. The one your team gives you when you passionately explain your latest big idea & they stare back blankly, like you’ve just started speaking ancient Greek.

Sound familiar?

A client said to me recently, “Debra, I already know everything you teach the team. But when you say it, they believe it.”

At first, I was a little offended. I mean, thanks for the compliment… I think? But then I realised that’s actually the magic of what I do.

I’m not there to teach you what you already know. I’m there to translate it.

BUSINESS TOOLS & REAL-LIFE LESSONS

When Your Team Doesn’t Get It, But You Do

Visionaries often do know what needs to be done.

You’ve got the clarity, the energy, the drive. You see the future of the business long before anyone else does. The problem is that your team doesn’t live inside your head. They don’t see what you see, feel what you feel, or make the intuitive leaps you make.

So, you explain, they nod, you think they get it… & then they go off & do something completely different.

Frustrating? Absolutely.

That’s where I come in.

Think of me as your translator. I take those big ideas that live in your brain & turn them into clear, simple, practical language that your team can actually connect with.

And sometimes, it’s just the messenger that makes the difference.

When they hear it from you, it sounds like another big, impossible idea. When they hear it from me, it sounds achievable.

That’s not about ego. It’s about perspective.

Your team needs to be heard too.

Here’s the other thing. Often, your team has things they want to say but never quite get the chance. Whether it’s fear, respect, or just a lack of airtime, they hold back.

Part of my role is to give them that space. When they feel heard, they start to engage. When they engage, they align.

And suddenly, your brilliant ideas start getting traction.

It’s not about who’s right, it’s about what works.

You don’t need another consultant telling you what to do. You need someone who can take what you already know, make it real for the team, & create the environment for everyone to pull in the same direction.

So yes, maybe you do know it all. But if your team isn’t hearing it from you, that’s where I can help.

I help translate your vision into plain language, bring your team on board, & make sure everyone’s not just nodding, but actually moving in the same direction.

Because a business can only go as far as the team that believes in it.

MEET OUR TEAM

In this section, I introduce the team & our Trusted Partners.

This week, I’m thrilled to reintroduce you to someone who’s no stranger to shaking things up – Stanley Henry.

Stanley runs The Attention Seeker, & I’ve had the pleasure of working with him & his incredible leadership team as they’ve embedded EOS into their business.

If you’ve spent more than five minutes online, you’ve probably already seen his work. The Attention Seeker is the powerhouse behind some of the boldest personal brands & challenger campaigns out there – from Six Sixty to One NZ (formerly Vodafone) & The Warriors – as well as many founders of privately owned businesses who want to stand out for all the right reasons.

Now Stanley’s back – with stories, lessons & some no-nonsense advice from life inside a fast-growing creative business

What makes your approach unique in your industry?

Most agencies obsess over platforms, formats, or algorithms. We don’t.

At The Attention Seeker, we focus on attention first: who you’re talking to, what they care about, and how to make them stop scrolling. Everything else is just tools.

What makes us different is that we act like your entire content department. From strategy to video, captions to community management, it’s all done in-house by a team of creators, not account managers. No fluff. No ‘month-long discovery phases.’ Just content that actually connects.

And we build a brand the same way we built our own: by showing up relentlessly and being impossible to ignore.

Can you share a success story where you made a significant impact for a client?

Pizza Hut came to us wanting to feel like a modern brand again.

We built them a full short-form video strategy; funny, irreverent, and unapologetically Kiwi. Within six months, their videos were being stitched, duetted, and shared across the country. People started commenting, “I didn’t even know I liked Pizza Hut again.”

Their brand perception shifted. Sales followed. All from leaning into personality and storytelling, not just pushing deals.

What challenges do you see your clients commonly face, and how do you help them overcome these?

The biggest challenge is visibility paralysis. Brands want to be seen but are terrified to stand out. So they play it safe. They post once a month. They water down their messaging until it’s bland.

We help them get brave. We show them that real growth comes from consistency, clarity, and saying something worth hearing. Not everyone will like it, and that’s the point.

What trends are you noticing in your field, and how do you adapt to stay ahead?

Video podcasts are no longer optional—they’re becoming standard. We’ve already built a full video production pipeline, optimised for YouTube and social platforms. At the same time, we’re noticing shorter-form storytelling is gaining traction, so we help our clients repurpose long episodes into punchy clips to increase reach.

What is the most common mistake you see businesses make, and how can they avoid it?

They treat podcasting as a marketing add-on instead of a relationship-building tool. The ones who succeed focus on authenticity, storytelling, and consistency—not just conversions. Our advice: Stop trying to sell. Start connecting.
