Last Sunday reminded me that even the best-laid plans can turn into an unplanned endurance event.
One minute you’re off on a “famous” six-hour walk in the Southern Highlands. The next, you’re sliding down a washed-out track, twisting a knee, discovering leeches you never invited, & calling in Police Rescue because you’ve run out of options & daylight.
By 6.30 pm, we were perched on a cliff ledge with a dead end in front of us & no chance of getting back out before dark.
Not ideal.
So we did the only sensible thing. We stopped, shared our coordinates & waited.
Several hours later, six absolute legends from Police Rescue, SES & Ambulance hiked in with massive packs, head torches & a level of calm professionalism that made my swollen knee feel like a minor detail.
We finally stumbled out at 1.00 am, tired, grateful, leech-free… mostly… & very aware that the “plan” had not survived first contact with reality.
