Better Business, Better Life – Issue 194

I’ve been having a fascinating set of conversations lately.

Not about growth. Not about profit. Not about systems.

About identity.

The first two months of this year have been productive, full of back-to-back sessions & 90-minute meetings. And next week I’m back in Auckland again.

The work is moving. Teams are stepping up. Structure is holding.

And that’s exactly where something unexpected often happens.

When the business starts running well, founders don’t always feel relief.

Sometimes they feel… displaced.

That quiet, uncomfortable question starts creeping in:

If they don’t need me in the weeds anymore… who am I now?

Which brings me to something far more common than most founders will admit.

BUSINESS TOOLS & REAL-LIFE LESSONS

When Letting Go Feels Like Losing Control

Let’s get straight to the point. This happens to far more founders than they will ever admit.

You build a proper leadership team. They actually step up. You hand over operations, sales, marketing, people… all of it. The machine finally hums without you.

And then you wake up one morning, stare at your calendar, realise it is empty, & absolutely freak out.

You feel irrelevant. Useless. A bit lost. You start wondering if you should poke around in someone else’s to-do list just to feel needed again.

It is the founder’s version of phantom limb syndrome. You know you should be celebrating, but instead you’re slightly nauseous & desperate to grab a mop so you can prove you still matter.

This is the trap. If you’re not careful, you’ll meddle, create unnecessary work, or wedge yourself back into decisions your team is perfectly capable of handling. It is the fastest way to undo the progress you worked so hard to create.

Now for the good bit. This story has a brilliant ending.

Let Me Tell You About Justine

Justine is the founder of Your Virtual Assistant & The Lever. She has always been a trailblazer. Years ago, she brought virtual assistants into New Zealand long before it was fashionable. She saw the need, built the model, shaped an industry & genuinely shifted the way small businesses operate.

Fast forward to about a year ago. She had done the hard yards, implemented a solid operating system, built a leadership team she trusted, & delegated properly. No half measures. She let them run the business.

Then one morning, the panic hit. She rang me & said, in that very honest way she has.

“Debra, I feel completely useless. I do not know what I’m supposed to do. I feel like I have no purpose.”

This is the moment every founder meets sooner or later. When the weeds finally clear, the silence can be unnerving.

So I told her the truth.

“You can now do what visionaries are meant to do. You get to think big again. You get to imagine the future. You get to be the person who spots the next groundbreaking idea, just like you did in the early days.”

She wasn’t convinced at first. That empty calendar still looked suspicious. But she took the challenge seriously & gave herself permission to step into true visionary territory.

A Few Weeks Later…

She came back & said something every founder wants to be able to say.

“It has changed my world.”

With the day-to-day running without her, she had the headspace to innovate again. She could look outward, explore new opportunities, create partnerships, think strategically & reconnect with the part of herself that built the company in the first place.

And that’s when The Lever was born – the next iteration of being able to support business owners in a more meaningful way.

That’s the next game changer for the industry & their business…

This is the prize most people never reach because they never let go long enough to get there.

The Uncomfortable Truth

If stepping into visionary space feels strange, it is only because you’ve been doing two or three jobs for too long. Your purpose hasn’t vanished. It has levelled up.

When the business can run without you, it finally means you can do the role you were always meant to do.

The future-focused one.

The creative one.

The bold one.

The one who changes things.

Just like Justine did before. Just like she is doing again now.

If you’ve built a team that can run the business, your next job is not to squeeze yourself back in. It is to step up & look ahead.

That is where the real value sits. That is where the impact is made. That is where the magic returns.

MEET OUR TEAM

I want to put the spotlight back on Glenda Lewis – a seasoned CFO turned Leadership Specialist & Public Speaker.

Glenda has spent years helping business owners move from financial overwhelm to financial clarity, while strengthening the leadership muscle required to sustain growth. She knows first-hand that strong numbers without strong leadership is a fragile combination.

Many of the owners she works with aren’t just stressed about cash flow or margins. They’re carrying the weight of team performance, accountability gaps & the pressure of making the right calls.

Her approach blends systems, strategy & practical leadership development to create businesses that are steady, scalable & sustainable.

This month, she’s sharing fresh insights from the work she’s doing right now – & they’re as practical as they are powerful.

What makes your approach unique in your industry?

I am a Chief Financial Officer turned Leadership Specialist, and my work is grounded in the belief that sustainable business growth requires both financial clarity and strong leadership capability.

Over the years, I noticed that many business owners and leaders felt overwhelmed – not just by cash flow or performance pressures, but by a lack of systems to manage people, decisions, and strategy effectively. That insight led me to bring together two disciplines that are often treated separately: finance and leadership.

Through The Leadership Academy, I help leaders develop practical, real-world leadership capability – not theory for theory’s sake, but tools and behaviours that directly impact performance. Complimenting this, Step Out. Transform. allows me to work more deeply with businesses on strategy, execution, and leadership systems. Together, the approach ensures leaders are supported both personally and organisationally.

Can you share a success story where you made a significant impact for a client?

A common challenge I see is technically strong leaders who have been promoted quickly and struggle to make the shift from doing the work to leading the work.

In one engagement, a group of senior leaders enrolled in The Leadership Academy because they felt overwhelmed, deeply involved in operational detail, and hesitant to let go of control.

Through the programme, they developed a shared leadership language and practical tools around delegation, decision-making, and accountability – along with the confidence to lead through others.

Within months, leaders reported reclaiming significant time, having more constructive conversations, and making clearer, faster decisions. Teams became more empowered, performance improved, and leaders moved from reactive problem-solving to intentional, strategic leadership.

The most significant impact was the shift from dependency to capability. Leaders stopped carrying everything themselves and began leading through others, resulting in clearer accountability, better decisions, and stronger performance.

What challenges do you see your clients commonly face, and how do you help them overcome these?

The most common challenges I see are:

  1. Leaders overwhelmed by competing priorities
  2. Lack of clarity around expectations and accountability
  3. Strategy that isn’t embedded into daily decision-making
  4. Strong technical performers struggling in leadership roles

I help leaders overcome these challenges by combining financial discipline with practical leadership strategy.

Through The Leadership Academy, leaders develop the core skills and behaviours required to lead effectively – including asking better questions, delegating with clarity, and leading with intention. For organisations seeking deeper, business-wide change, Step Out. Transform. provides an additional layer of support, embedding those leadership behaviours into strategy, structure, and execution rhythms.

Each offering stands on its own, while together they create a powerful pathway for sustainable leadership and business performance.

What trends are you noticing in your field, and how do you adapt to stay ahead?

There is a growing recognition that leadership capability is no longer a “nice to have” – it is a core business requirement.

Leaders are seeking practical, experience-based development, not abstract models. They want support that reflects the real pressures of running a business. My background as a Chartered Accountant, combined with executive coaching and facilitation training, allows me to bridge that gap – ensuring leadership development is grounded in commercial reality.

Both The Leadership Academy and Step Out. Transform. continue to evolve based on what leaders and businesses are facing right now, keeping the work relevant and immediately applicable.

What is the most common mistake you see businesses make, and how can they avoid it?

The most common mistake is assuming that leadership and strategy will “take care of themselves” once they’ve been discussed.

In reality, clarity needs structure, repetition, and reinforcement. Businesses avoid this mistake by investing in leadership capability and building systems that support consistent decision-making and accountability.

This is exactly what I focus on – helping leaders step back, gain clarity, and put the right financial, people, and leadership systems in place to drive growth.
