Better Business, Better Life – Issue 218

I had one of those mornings last week where my body made the decision before my brain had a chance.

I’d been out every night. Dinner. A comedy show. Meetings. Travel. I got home late, knowing I had another huge couple of days ahead. The plan for the next day looked something like this.

Pilates. Charge the car. Beauty appointment. Sound bath. Nails. Pack for Geelong. Pack for Perth. Leave home by 4.00 pm.

Looking at it written down, it sounds ridiculous. At the time, it just felt… normal.

BUSINESS TOOLS & REAL-LIFE LESSONS

When Self-Care Starts Feeling Like Hard Work

The alarm went off early. I switched it off, gave myself permission to go back to sleep, & thought I’d see what happened. If I slept through Pilates, then clearly I needed the sleep more than the workout.

I woke up at 9.00 am.

That is unheard of for me.

My body wasn’t being lazy. It was waving a white flag.

I postponed a podcast recording because I wasn’t feeling 100%. Then I looked at my diary again.

That’s when it hit me.

Was racing around to all these wellness appointments actually going to make me feel less stressed? Or was trying to fit them all in becoming another source of stress?

The irony wasn’t lost on me.

I cancelled the sound bath. I cancelled another treatment. Suddenly, my day opened up.

I packed for Geelong without rushing. I packed for Perth without watching the clock every five minutes. I took Apollo & Hermes for a long walk. By the time I left for the gala dinner, I felt calm, organised & surprisingly refreshed.

Not because I’d done more for myself.

Because I’d done less.

It made me think about something I say to leadership teams almost every week.

Less is more.

If everything is important, nothing is.

Businesses are brilliant at creating complexity. More initiatives. More meetings. More reports. More projects. More priorities. More “must-have” systems. More dashboards. More KPIs.

Everyone is busy.

Very little actually moves.

Then leaders wonder why the team feels overwhelmed.

The same thing happens in our personal lives. We fill our calendars with things that are all good ideas in isolation. Exercise. Meditation. Wellness appointments. Networking. Learning. Social events.

Individually, they’re positive.

Collectively, they become exhausting.

Somewhere along the way, self-care turns into another job.

The real question isn’t, “What else should I add?”

It’s, “What could I remove?”

The businesses I see making the biggest progress aren’t the ones trying to do twenty things at once. They’re the ones with the discipline to focus on the handful of things that will genuinely move the business forward.

The same applies to us.

Sometimes the kindest thing you can do for yourself isn’t booking another wellness activity.

It’s giving yourself permission to cancel one.

Because clarity creates confidence.

And sometimes the fastest way to feel better isn’t adding something to your life.

It’s taking something off your list.
